What type anesthesia will be used for my plastic surgery ?

An anesthesia is largely divided into General Anesthesia (GA) and Local Anesthesia . However, many cosmetic surgery medical institutions are using Sedative Anesthesia to reduce pain and anxiety. So, what is the difference between Sedative Anesthesia, General Anesthesia and Local Anesthesia?
  • General Anesthesia refers to a state in which all four aspects of consciousness, sensation, movement, and reflexes are blocked. Neuromuscular blockers are used to block movement and reflexes, and a tracheal tube is used because the patient cannot breathe on his or her own.
  • Local Anesthesia is a method of temporarily blocking sensation by blocking the nerves in the surgical area. In contrast, Sedative Anesthesia is the sleeping state, allowing the patient to breathe on their own during surgery and may wake up or move if they feel extreme pain.
  • Sleep anesthesia puts the patient into a state of sleep. Since it does not completely block consciousness, you may move or wake up from pain. The drug effect and maintenance period may vary depending on the type and dose of the drug used. Propofol and midazolam are mainly used, with propofol allowing sleep for 5 to 10 minutes and midazolam for about an hour. However, because pain or irritation may cause the patient to wake up during surgery, additional medication is administered as needed.

Does sedation require an anesthesiologist?

During General Anesthesia, sleeping pills or sedatives are administered to eliminate consciousness, painkillers to eliminate pain, neuromuscular blockers to eliminate movement, and inhalation anesthetics or intravenous anesthetics to maintain anesthesia. So, as it was mentioned above, patient lose total control of body and rely on anesthesia, there must be anesthesiologist to monitor patient and drug injection process.
In the case of Sedative Anesthesia, a small amount of sleeping pills or sedatives used to put the patient into a sleeping state. As a result, it can be said that there is a significant difference in drug usage and process. So as result, most clinics has no anesthesiologist on site, because sedation is used for uncomplicated treatments, wear off quickly, presence of an anesthesiologist is not necessary. A nurse under surgeon control will give you conscious sedation and monitor your sleep.

Is it most safe for me if there is anesthesiologist on site?

Most patient think that if something will go wrong, anesthesiologist will rescue their life. However, if we take glance form medical aspect, anesthesiologist is specialized on drug and control of anesthesia, but person who rescues live is intensivist -critical care physician or emergency unit physician and the most importation tool in their hand is Intensive Care Unit adapted with equipment for critical care. Wherefore, if you are worrywart, then you should chose only big hospitals with ICU (intensive care unite), not clinic with anesthesiologist.
